Les DNA titrent sur une page: "hospitalité biodynamique". Il y est question de bioconstruction, de viticulture biodynamique et d'écotourisme au Vignoble Klur à Katzenthal qui propose aux visiteurs des ateliers du vin, de découverte, de dégustation et des séjours bien être. During this sommer the Blue House in Riquewihr is booked for short stays for family come together. Perfect location if you don't want to drive too far, stay next to an airport or train connexion, take grand'ma, grand'pa, children, grand'children and share this large holiday house together. All facilities nearby for different generations and a lot to see and visit ! "we had the most peacefull holidays of our life ! quietness and climate where perfect, hikking and dreaming, our dogs loved also a lot. Perhaps you should tell to your visitors that the 2 houses are not really independant, we didn't know about it. The stay was wonderfull and we certainly will come back to this region another time".
You are right, the houses are built "back to back" but the private outdoors are separate and Chez Marie is only occupied in july and august. Thanks for this and see you soon.
At the back of the valley next to the village we have saules trees longing the stream. We use the dried and crushed bark, about 50 grammes of bark infused for 20 minutes in 5 litres of very hot water. Diluted at the 10th then added (sometimes mixed with nettles) in the pulverising recipient sometimes with copper.
This mixture is used in the prevention of mildew. It should be harvested in the spring before the leaves come out. It has been kown for ages due to its saliciyclic acid (which is the base of aspirin).
A very hot afternoon for this walk from the wine estate in the village to the Wineck Schlossberg Grand Cru hill... Gérard Verret from Jardin Gourmand the specialist of wild plants and their transformation into tastefull dishes, gave a lot of informations about wild plants to the group. It was not easy to find some "eatable" plants in this summer begining because a few plants where still to old and not tasty at all. Wild carotts, plantain and this very strange 'Eglantier des Vignes" discovered by Gérard....read more.
Stay at Klur wine-estate in Katzenthal and enjoy the small garden with many herbs and spices, which is especially created for you, savory, mint, basilic, willow, laurel, sage, and many others... Here, the ancient roses have overrunned the parsley and the thyme... but perhaps will they soon be on your table ? Early in the morning, it is a leave day in the sowing calendar (calendrier des semis),the 501 biodynamic preparation was ready to be sprayed on the foliage of the half of our parcels, 4 grammes of silicium in 35 litres of rain water per hectare, dynamised for one hour, spray for 5 to 8 hours. The soil work goes on with the plow or the hand cultivator, the vegetation is doing well and quickly. The roof of the cellar is mauve this month: chive flowers, thyme, sage, and many new flowers... as if they had passed the word around for the colour...We have done the first bottling 15 days ago, a fruit day, soft filtering on diatom (grinded shellfish).
Here, you can try the organic mattress and especially the ergonomic garden bench! Klur wine-estate has just acquired this armchair to be relaxed, made in wood from local forests and which doesn't need to be treated. You can sit on it alone, with one or two personn and look at the sky, at the the top of the trees...Placed in our birds garden, next to the swing and to the hammock, you will enjoy it during your stay, dayly or nightly, and you won't forget your journey in Alsace. Last week, 8 "gourmet" were reunited in order to learn to cook the famous alsacian kougelhopf with Clarisse Zenner!! But not any how: at first, everything was organic: yeast, flour, butter... and it was a good occasion to talk about the rising dough, the best temperature, place, day, like the wine fermentation... it was baked in an ancient mould which was used many of times before, and then, Clarisse has brought different unusual ingredients which were used or not, it depended of the desire of each one, chutney have also be baked while the dough was rised, also a wine -tasting...click on more.
After a Saint-Médard wine-tasting which combines our wines and the terroirs expression, it's difficult to take the wheel...but we have our grape-picker room with the small courtyard which is always available for our guests. The discover of organic wines was been completed with organic products from farmers from the Kaysersberg valley. This family from Ludwigsburg, and his friends, in Alsace for a few days, have enjoyed it, and a taxi has taken them back to their hotel. The german review Weinwelt has tasted and dedicated the "best Alsace wines" in the april-May 2010 edition, "they are back". A nice recommandation for the aera, its diversity, its gastronomy and its wineyards. "God bless Alsace". Concerning the wines, the organic one were honoured but also the wine grower work and the terroir: "Riesling, pinot blanc, pinot gris, couldn't we think they are wine like in Germany? Here is the difference. The alsatian wines from this variety of grappe are inimitable and it's also true for the organic label, they are all individualist.
The Klur wine-estate has presented a crémant without sulfite and also a gewurztraminer to the wine-tasting. They get the following marks: "Gewurztraminer Klur 2007. A gewurztraminer doesnt' have to be full and sweet, a nose of honey, lemon, white flowers and the spices wake up, fresh and original. Mark 86. The crémant without sulfite, best mark of its category (89): a surprising champagne nose, with brioche, apple taste, an elegant fruit, fresh like a green apple, lemon taste, mineral and very strong".

With our expert Hélène Burtscher-Fleck from l'atelier K'art'on, many agile hands have made founitures from cardboard to recycle. It was on saturday and sunday, they could choose between 3 models. Of course, they have also enjoyed a visit of the wine-cellar, a few glasses of wine around the wood stove, and exchanges about organic culture and biodynamie. Each participant has taken away its own creation. Next dates : on April, the 10th and 11th, and the 13th and 14th, on May, the 8th and 9th.

A few nice tasting-notes to greet the last-born from Klur Clément wine-estate : a crémant without added sulfite "Yellow gold. Open nose conjuring up jammy fruits and sweet pastry. Palate with a lively structure. A very honest crémant". The Guide Gilbert et Gaillard notes it 84 (85 for the traditional crémant, which is "light gold. Fairly ripe and fruity nose. Freshness, fruity finish of quite substantial lengh. A wine for sharing over a buffet".
In the Weinwelt (german wine magazine), it's one of the 1st alsatian crémants, with a note of 89. "Un nez surprenant, comme un Champagne, brioche, pomme, un fruit élégant, frais comme une pomme verte, citroné, minéral et très intense".
Organicaly perfect and with refinement!.... We are touched."Ecologiquement parfait avec une point de raffinement" dixit the Maison Ecologique.( french magazine) "D'un coup de baguette magique à partir d'un existant peu glorieux, avec une pointe d'huile de coude, un esprit créatif sans limites, une volonté écologique ferme et sans concessions, le lieu est transfomé en une halte incontournable pour toute personne ayant un projet d'écoconstruction tant il est inspirant(...). Le clou de la visite, la cave située de l'autre coté de la courette. Ronde et unique en son genre elle abrite des futs de chêne qui semblent n'attendre que vous. (...)Francine et Clément ont placé la barre très haut, difficile de faire écologiquement mieux, à tout point de vue. Assurément l'une des meilleures adresses pour un véritable séjour écologique en Alsace".

The review Revue VITI from december 2009 consacres a report on wine cellar eco-conception and on wine holiday, and cites Klur wine-estate in Katzenthal as an example: " family organic wine estate, Klur has celebrated his 10th year of life on September 2009, the 4th, and proposes today many kind of worshops: discovery, cooking, wine-tasting initiation... It's an accasion to spend a good time by discovering family wine and substainable tourism (...) This workshops are organised all allong the year for 1, 2 or more people, friends, family or company. You can choose: journey on a special theme, workshop in one day or visit and wine-tasting with professionnals who share the same philosophy as the wine grower." (...). The holiday apartments and the wine cellar are built and maintained with organic products, the visit and the workshops are made in substainable developpment spirit (wine cardboard recycling to make some furnitures, picking of wild plants in organic wines and cooking workshops, also biciycle and hiking guide to walk in the area softly for the guests.
An exclusif wine-tasting of the 2007 Riesling, vintage which Andreas Larsson considers as a very good in Alsace, the wines are pure, transparent, fresh and well-done. The Grand Cru Wineck Schlossberg from Clément Klur is in "My Top Picks", : "merveilleusement minéral et serré, très pure, innocent au palais, excellente longueur en bouche, encore très jeune mais avec un grand potentiel". (mineral, pure, long in the mouth, still young but with a high potential). Alsa noted the riesling Klur 2007 (he 's already tasted it last year, but this time it was older: : "nez de citron et miel, sec et droit avec une fraicheur éclatante, bien structuté, belle finale" (lemon noze, dry, fresh, nice structure, nice final).
30 winegrovers were at the Grand Hotel in Paris to make taste their grands crus to the wine-cellar from Paris and to the press. It was driven by the CIVA, about different kind of soils, and the grand cru Wineck Schlossberg Klur from 1999 and from 2008 were presented.

In the area of Colmar, he recommends to go from Kaysersberg to Turkheim by foot by stopping at some places, one of which is in Katzenthal at Klur wine-estate. Winter is a rest period for the soil, the plant and the winegrower; in this season, the sap and the water go very deep under the earth, it's the same for our energy, an introversion time. It's a season on which it feels so good to be doing nothing, like the nature...WE DREAM ABOUT IT... Actually, the riesling and gewurztraminer grand cru are still fermenting in the wine cellar and we have to check it, nearby, we have to prepare orders to be exported, we label bottles due to the sales of the end of the year, at the office, we are handling the accouting, the customer contact, prospects, we are preparing the win -fair for spring 2010. At the same time, outside, we go on pruning and rooting out, we juggle with the good dates of the "calendrier des semis" and with the snow or extreme cold ...

Parisien Libéré (french newspaper) talks about organic Alsace wines and about Vignoble Klur in its edition from October2009, the 3rd. "Seul vin d'assemblage alsacien d'appelation controlée avec l'edelzwicker, le Gentil désigne les assemblages harmonieux de plusieurs cépages blancs dont au moins 50% de cépages nobles. Avec ce cahier des charges chacune des 25 maisons alsaciennes qui en produisent le fait à sa manière. (...) Chez les Klur on fait un Genitl de Katz, clin d'oeil au village Katzenthal, la vallée des chats, avec du gewurztraminer, du pinot blanc et du pinot gris. Objectif: élargir la gamme avec un vin qui sort du lot, qu'on peut laisser au frais et sortir pour des amis de passage, un vrai vin de convivialité, pour le brunch du dimanche, ou l'apéro, il tient la route.

The wine magazine Decanter tasted 112 riesling grand cru from Alsace vintage 2007 in his october/november issue. Alsace riesling are a good value ! About riesling grand cru Wineck Schlossberg from Vignoble Klur Clément: "classic dry riesling with power and persistence. Strong backbone and concentration. Long but slightly dusty." Recommanded with 3 stars (14,5 to 16,5 points)

A vintage with little steps, we harvest 2 days and stop, harvest again and stop etc... the sky is still blue, indian summer in Alsace ! This morning we went to the Wineck-Schlossberg hill to cut the riesling grand cru grappes (13,5° alcohol), tomorrow we will continu with the gewurztraminer and finish this 2009 harvest. In the wine cellar the fermentations are going on very fast, pinot blanc and pinot gris go to finish soon. Below the first picture of the pinot noir from our little "school-vineyard". Nice grappes, beautiful weather, favorable days, motivated team, the winegrower is happy. This early vintage has kept its promise and any rain or storm didn't give trouble during the last days. Nights are cool, days are sunny. Everything is here to give a great harvest which looks promising. Now, we have picked up all pinots, muscats and sylvaner and we are waiting a few days before going on with riesling and gewurztraminer. The fermentation have started slowly, and we will tell you about the juce later. More détails and a retrospective of 2009 in the rest.
Michel Smith explains the interest of organic wines in the last Special vins issue of Paris Match and make a selection of 36 organic french wines under 10 euro, also Crémant d'Alsace made by Clément Klur is one of the 36 ! Following tasting note: "biodynamist, Francine and Clement Klur propose two versions of crémant d'Alsace one with, and one without sulfites. The first one is excellent, fresh, fine nose, grapefruit tastes, the second one is much fuller and remembers apples". About organic wines he thinks that the most important for the consumer is to know that this grappes grown on a healthy soil without chemicals, that the wines are full bodied, tasty, well balanced and fresh, and that the feeling is the one of tasting an alive wine."

"The welcoming could not have been better. We were welcomed warmly and we were explained all that we should know with great details. All the information given to us was very useful.We also loved the wine tasting tour chez le Vignoble Klur. We stayed at La maison Bleue, its location , its original decor was fanstastic, better than we expected all guests were comfortable and very pleased. One thing I found, specially me because I was the cook, was that the kitchen was a bit small to feed all these people. I guess that could not be helped. In any case I managed and we enjoyed numerous good communal meals on the terrace outside and in the lovely dining room. I really have no complaint nor do all our 13 guests. Au contraire, this vacation was for us all went beyond our expectation. I want to take the opportunity then to thank you for your taste, flair and vision which have allowed the success of this adventure".

Olivier Poussier (best sommelier of the world) tasted and selected the wines of 1300 french wine domaines for this 2010 issue of the best french wines guide published by the Revue des Vins de France. For the first year the wine estate Klur is part of this selection and the wines produced by Klur Clément became note between 14 and 16,5. "This wine estate make sincere wines without sophistication with an excellent price quality rapport. "10 years ago Clément Klur started a new winery, took his independance and the way to biodynamie. The family is also very involved in tourism and cultural events are sometimes organised in the round shaped wine cellar. This riesling 2007, born in this organic, grass covered cellar without external yiest is a very fresh wine. A young wine but very elegant wine from granit soils, aromes of white fruits, flowers, honey and spices. To drink now or keep it for a while (rest sugar 3g/l)"
Dry Alsace wines, a report by Catherine Gerbod about riesling and rest sugar. For the french wine control border, dry wines are wines with less then 4 gr sugar. This is not always possible in Alsace where you may taste "dry wines" and clearly feel that they are dry but disc over that they have 7 gr !! a special terroir and balance is the secret of this perfect white wines. Klur wine estate was born on september 4th 1999, and on september 5th, just before starting the picking of 2009 vintage we will organise an open house for everybody who.helped us during these 10 years, to go the organic & biodynamic way we choosed, to built the wine cellars, to sell our wines, to buy and drink it... Starting at 4pm, there will be wine tastings, organic farmer products combinations with the Klur wines, musical moments, pictures of past 10 years, etc. If you are in Alsace at that time let us know.

En ce début août, les grappes de muscat sont déjà au début du stade de la véraison (mûrissement du fruit) et laissent présager des vendanges précoces et une bonne maturité pour ce millésime 2009... L'alternance de courtes périodes de pluies et d'ensoleillement intenses en juin et juillet, pourtant propice au développement de maladies n'a pas eu d'incidence sur nos vignes. L'on voit quelques petites tâches de mildiou et d'oïdium mais sans gravité. Les tisanes et les très faibles doses de cuivre et soufre suffisent à protéger la plante. De même les attaques de vers de la grappe sont faibles, peut être en raison de notre choix de fauchage beaucoup moins fréquents dans les rangs cette année, donc de la présence d'herbes hautes très diversifiées (graminées et fleurs), servant de refuge à de multiples auxiliaires (comme d'ailleurs sur le toit de notre cave enherbée , photo ci dessous). En cave le pinot gris Klur et le riesling grand cru Wineck Schlossberg ont enfin terminé leurfermentation et sont prêts pour la mise en bouteille prévue le 1er et 2 septembre. Il reste encore un peu d'effeuillage à faire, travailler le sol autour des pieds si la végétation pousse (assez calme pour l'instant) et les vendanges à préparer...affaire à suivre....
Whenever the vignes let us alone, we build something... a shelter for the material was missing (for the trailer, tracked vehicle, Fergusson tractor), we have choosen a structure with a wood fram and a weatherboarding made with spruce from the Vosges which isn't treated. The company Gutzwiller from Oltingue has set it up, they are specialised in wood constructions and the roof has been realised by Christian Lang (Optigrün process) , already used in 1999 for the vinification-cellar roof . 29 avril 2009, it is springtime and everything awakes ! this special and rare vineyards tulips bring a lot of sunshine actually. It is a period of soil work and for the biodynamic preparation called 500. Yesterday was perfect because the rain of the night opened the soils after 10 days of very hot and dry weather. At 6 pm everything was ready except this home made engin used to spray the preparation on the vineyards soils, Clément had to repare quick before spreeding out until the night. During the day we prepared the embotteling of next week and had to clean the tuns. As pinot gris Klur and riesling grand cru Wineck Schlossberg are still in fermentation, the wines for the Voyou de Katz and Gentil de Katz 2008 are ready. Today 2 delegations of the national organisation Vignerons Independants visited us. 50 wine growers from other regions in France interested by organic growing, architecture, and wine tourism. This is the wine growers life...always jumping from one work to the other !
After this long winter time, the first flowers came out this week...we just finished cuting the vines (its called pruning) because we started late january to respect the rythm of the plant. Actually we start to attach the vine shoots, this a women work, man repar the system of trellising (but organisation may also be different). Everything is still asleap outside but there is some activity in the wine cellar: some of our 2008 wines didn't finish their fermentation. Perhaps they also feel the growing up of the sap in the vine stocks outside.... Last 2 months we didn't have a lot of opportunities to respect the moon rythms because we had to share our outside work between the rain periods and snow storms, a real wintertime !! normally it is better to prun young vinestock at downward and weaker ones at rising moon but it is not always possible. Either we didn't spread the bio dynamic preparations for the soil because it was to weat and the tractor would have pack the ground of the vineyards and this is not good for the life in the soil in spring. We will do it this month and tell you about it. Maria Thun's calender of sowings remembers us that "if the meadows are covered with snow in march, the harvest will be good", so everything is perfect, just be patient....

Dans le cadre du Printemps des Poêtes, la Médiathèque de Kaysersberg a, comme tous les ans, décentralisé une soirée au Vignoble Klur, et Jean Marie Radiguet bien connu du public, est venu réciter Pablo Neruda. Fortes vibrations du Canto Generale qui ont fait s'activer sérieusement les vins encore en fermentation et séduit les quelques 30 invités présents. Ce matin le compteur d'électricité avait fondu !!! pour vous dire....Lire ou relire aussi son autobiographie "J'avoue avoir vécu", voir ou revoir le documentaire consacré à sa vie diffusé sur Arte et qui éclaire aussi d'autres facettes du mythe Neruda et bien sûr le film Le Postier avec P.Noiret. Bref ! un beau moment qui imprègnera le millésime 2008 !

Belge consumer is very informed about Alsace wines as his country is still the first importeur for this french wine region. It was very important to make a selection of a few young or something differant domains and Vignoble Klur is featured too. The magazine Tasted published his second wine guide all selected by Andreas Larsson best sommelier of the world 2007. Wine from France, Italy, Spain, Germany and US and a few riesling from Alsace specially 2006 and 2007 vintages. Andreas Larsson selected 97 Alsace wines and Riesling Klur 2007 among the 8 selections for 2007: "young and bright, pure and fruity with citrus notes and some stone fruits, good grip on the palate, fresh and fairly long. Classically Dry". Vintage 2006 he selected the Riesling Wineck Schlossberg in his top picks "young and bright colour, the nose is pure and expressive with hints of citrus, minerals and stone fruits, good structure on the palate, still firm with a high freshness, long and mouth watering finish."
It happened !! all our bedrooms are now full organic. You perhaps know our coton beddings and german wheat or millet pillows, now we changed all the matresses for natural products and you may choose between 100% latex, or latex and coco or latex and straw. We keep some traditional ones to combine with over matresses in organic coton or wool. All our beds are made from wood without sticks or mettalic parts, no treatment at all. We bought these different types at Ardelaine, Sanadorm, Allnatura, Loewe. We clean the bedings with Sonett products. If you want to try it you are welcome. Every one brought his rough-hew for fire, some chesnuts and apples...we prepared organic bread and Gentil de Katz. Guests came from Colmar, Kaysersberg, Strasbourg, Nancy and Marie Barthelemy, the narrator, told us stories about life and mysteries. The evening ended with dancing fires in the court. Tasting notes in french, sorry for: "Riesling Klur2007, SO2 total 75, libre 25, or blanc lumineux, floral, fleurs blanches et minéral. Elégant. En bouche, de la fraîcheur, de la vivacité même, qui évolue sur un fruité de belle acidité. Persistance aromatique intéressante, riche, aux pointes minérales. On est tenté de dire un vin atypique au bon sens du terme. Même si sa belle minéralité (très granitique) finit par dominer les arômes floraux et fruités. 2coeurs. Selection of 17 wines and there are 2 Klur wines ! our pinot blanc and pinot noir. Pinot blanc 2007 "very fruity, light botritis, very mineral and crispy wine. Good structure. A typical pinot blanc with a very interesting "matière", 85 points. Pinot noir 2006, "red fruit aromes, nice and elegant taste, very fine and very good structure, 83 points.

We met a lot of nice people, spoke about our wine estate and discovered marvelous wines from all over the world and famous canadian restaurants. After a few days we needed a walk to the "mountain of Montreal", Mont Royal, the downtown and St Laurents view was perfect on this day.
